About the Course

In partnership with Marts&Lundy and Maia McGill, Consulting Partner and Founder of the Inclusive Philanthropy Institute, the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy is pleased to host a three-week virtual webinar tailored for mission-driven institutions committed to addressing systemic inequities within fundraising.

This series will equip healthcare fundraisers with the necessary tools to navigate the unique challenges of behavioral health fundraising and philanthropy. Learners will explore how systemic biases and stigmas influence fundraising outcomes; learn strategies to integrate inclusive philanthropy principles into their work; and implement best practices to address biases in donor cultivation, storytelling, and fundraising strategies, ensuring that behavioral health initiatives receive equitable support.

The series includes:

  • Live webinars with expert facilitators
  • Completion of one homework assignment. While completion of the homework assignment is not mandatory, it is highly encouraged, as it is a valuable opportunity to integrate best practices and apply course concepts to your work.
  • Learners should plan to invest a total of 4-6 hours per week over the duration of the course.
  • All modules are recorded should you miss a date.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, learners will:
  • Understand behavioral health stigma and its impact on fundraising and philanthropy.
  • Examine fundraising strategies in support of behavioral health initiatives.
  • Measure fundraising success through an equity-based lens.

Full participation in “Transforming Behavioral Health Fundraising Through Inclusive Philanthropy: Addressing Bias, Fostering Collaboration, and Driving Impact” is applicable for 4.5 points in Category 1.B-Education of the CFRE International application for initial certification and/or recertification.

Session Descriptions
April 8
Behavioral Health, Fundraising, and Bias
This module explores the intersection of behavioral health fundraising and bias, providing learners with a comprehensive understanding of the challenges associated with fundraising for behavioral health initiatives. Learners will identify how biases and stigmas, both within their institution and among donor communities, can shape fundraising strategies and outcomes. Case studies will be explored, examining how biases manifest in donor cultivation, storytelling, and campaign design, potentially reinforcing stereotypes.             
April 15
Integrating Inclusive Philanthropy into Behavioral Health Fundraising
Learners will explore how inclusive philanthropy establishes trust and expands donor engagement, specifically among socially, culturally, and economically diverse communities. Using practical frameworks and examples, this module provides resources for creating culturally competent fundraising initiatives that engage the communities your organization serves. Learners will complete a guided exercise to evaluate their current fundraising strategies and reimagine them through an equity-based lens. 
April 22
Implementing Best Practices and Strategic Frameworks
This final module focuses on equipping learners with actionable best practices and strategic frameworks to enhance their behavioral health fundraising efforts. Learners will also explore how to measure fundraising success through an equity-based lens, ensuring greater impact and inclusivity in their behavioral health fundraising initiatives.
