Selection Criteria

They are encouraged to answer the questions fully and to be as detailed and thorough as possible.

The AHP Foundation Board of Trustees reviews all eligible applications and will base their recommendations on the answers to these prompts:

  • Clear objectives for use of scholarship
  • Goals for professional development
  • How receiving the scholarship will benefit the awardee’s organization
  • Demonstrated financial need
  • How they have worked to create a diverse community or environment in their own life and how they might share this with the broader AHP community

The application deadline for all opportunities is February 5, 2024. The AHP Foundation Board of Trustees will meet in late February to choose the Foundation scholarship and HDEF of Canada bursary recipients.

For Canadians

Gord Durnan Education Fund and Michael K. Petrie Memorial Fund

The Gord Durnan Fund was established in honor of Gord Durnan. Gord began his career in healthcare philanthropy in 1977 and was the first Canadian to join AHP, passed both the CFRE and FAHP, and he was the first Canadian Si Seymour Award winner. Gord retired in 2005 and now dedicates his time to volunteering for many charitable organizations in Canada.

The Michael K. Petrie Memorial Fund was established in 2021 with a generous gift made by Ian M. Fraser MBA, FAHP, to honor his long-time colleague and friend, Michael K. Petrie, CFRE. Michael served the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP) as Canada's Regional Chair during a time of important transition for the Association and is fondly remembered for his dedicated service to his Canadian colleagues and the profession.

In honor of Gord’s and Michael’s contributions to healthcare philanthropy, these funds have been established to ensure that educational opportunities for healthcare fundraisers are available and accessible across Canada.

These funds award grants annually for eligible professional development activities, including:

  • Hosting a roundtable session for current and prospective AHP members throughout Canada for the purposes of networking and education;
  • AHP membership fees;
  • Pursuing an initial CFRE certification;
  • Paying tuition at an accredited institution for coursework related to philanthropy; and
  • Attending the AHP Development Primer, CFRE Exam Compass Review Course, or the Madison Institute.
