The Michael K. Petrie Memorial Fund

The Michael K. Petrie Memorial Fund

The Michael K. Petrie Memorial Fund was established in 2021 with a generous gift made by Ian M. Fraser MBA, FAHP, to honor his long-time colleague and friend, Michael K. Petrie, CFRE. Michael served the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP) as Canada's Regional Chair during a time of important transition for the Association and is fondly remembered for his dedicated service to his Canadian colleagues and the profession.

After a courageous battle with cancer, Michael died on May 27, 2021.

Background

Michael Petrie began his career in healthcare philanthropy in 1983 when he served as Executive Director (1983-1990) at the Credit Valley Hospital Foundation in Mississauga, Ontario. Following a short tenure at Calgary General Hospital in Alberta, he accepted the role of President and CEO for the South Fraser Healthcare Foundation (Surrey Memorial Hospital) in British Columbia, a position he held from 1992 to 1996.

From 1996 to 1999 Michael served as President and CEO of the British Columbia Cancer Foundation and Vice President of Development for the BC Cancer Agency in Vancouver. In this capacity, he transformed the Foundation into a proactive fundraising operation for one of Canada's leading cancer research organizations and positioned it as a national and international leader in ground-breaking research and treatment.

He also served as Vice-Chair for AHP International and proudly held the designation of Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE). This fund, a tribute to Michael's legacy in advancing healthcare philanthropy across Canada, was established to encourage and promote diversity and inclusion in philanthropy at healthcare institutions and organizations across Canada, ensuring that educational opportunities are available and accessible to qualifying AHP members in good standing.
