KC's journey at Avera Foundation exemplifies his outstanding leadership and commitment to philanthropy. Since joining Avera in 2021, KC's strategic vision and passion have led to record-setting fundraising years, including exceeding personal and team goals. His achievements include tripling average productivity in philanthropic giving and achieving a philanthropic return on investment of $19.11, far above the industry average. KC's leadership extends beyond fundraising, as he authored the Development Department Handbook to onboard and train new colleagues and has served in various leadership roles on nonprofit boards.

It was a conversation with a foundation employee at my Alma Mater that made me realize fundraising could be a career. I went into the nonprofit world following graduation and took the leap to healthcare philanthropy three years ago. I wanted to find an organization whose mission was something I could wear on my sleeve. Enter: Avera.

Although I could talk about our influence on the community or emphasis on patient and family support we have the chance to provide, I am going to take a different approach. In my first month with Avera, I was able to meet many colleagues being both current and retired. The thing I noticed most, each individual had one, two, three, or even four decades of service to our healing ministry. Each person beamed with pride as they took me on a spoken journey of their career. I was ready to sign a life-time contract.

It was my first travel trip as a front-line fundraiser. I was joined by a colleague that lead the donor visits while I supported and observed, adding to the conversation when relevant/able. At the end of the two-day trip, we talked in a coffee shop prior to heading to the airport. This colleague and I shared many stories and even more laughs. Just before we were ready to leave, he said “Talk to donors just how you talked to me, and you will do just fine in this role.”

Two things: 1. Nebraska Cornhusker Football–I was born in Lincoln and grew up right outside of it, in the shadow of Memorial Stadium. 2. Being an advisor for teens and young adults as they craft their own story. It brings great joy to see the immediate, “ah-ha” moments or long-term changes in confidence and charisma in the future leaders.

Build out your network of other healthcare professionals. There is a lot to learn on the healthcare side of things, so take the time to connect with the leaders and front-line staff of your hospital. And do the same thing with healthcare philanthropy professionals through AHP–take advantage of all they offer.

Fun Fact

I spent an entire NYE at a Chili’s in O’Hare airport before celebrating the start of the New Year 30,000 feet in the air.
