Before my current role in Healthcare Philanthropy, I was the executive director of Muscular Dystrophy Association in Wilmington NC. In that role, I worked closely with physicians at our clinics and through our clinical trials. I learned the importance of philanthropy in healthcare. When I decided to move to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, I saw the position at Novant Health Foundation and recognized that I could do so much more in the healthcare space.
I have seen what it means for someone to be scared with a diagnosis and not have the means to get treatment. Through philanthropy in healthcare, we can change that. I love being an advocate for people.
Probably like everyone, COVID changed my life. I spent eight years as the executive director at Muscular Dystrophy Association. In the midst of COVID, I was furloughed. It made me question my career path, in a good way. COVID helped me realize what I wanted in my life and how I wanted my career to reflect that. I decided to move closer to family and seek a career in healthcare.
I love when I make someone out in the community aware of a need that our patients have. I get passionate about the patient journey and gaps we might have. I love being able to showcase the "why", "the how we fix it" (being philanthropic support), and seeing the donors' eyes light up with the same intensity.
Always be a learner. Things ever evolve in healthcare. Do not be afraid not to know the answer, and change can be a good thing.
