Growing up my mom was very involved in our small community; she would bring me along to volunteer at events most weekends. This inspired my participation in fundraising at school, from door-to-door asks in elementary for Jump Rope for Heart to chairing the committee for a service project in high school. My desire to help and do work that would make an impact continued through post-secondary and into a summer intern role with the Alberta Cancer Foundation. I was immediately hooked seeing how much progress was made in cancer treatments because of philanthropic support.
I get to be myself every day at work. Healthcare philanthropy combines my admiration and interest in sciences with my love for helping others. I am genuinely excited to witness the progress that is made in treatment, research, and patient care. Knowing my enthusiasm is shared by my peers, colleagues, and the donors we work with is truly a privilege.
There was a time early in my career, where I didn't feel certain of what my next step should be, or if this was the career I wanted. I took some time to explore other potential career paths and had the opportunity to work with a variety of charitable organizations across Alberta. While I was able to build a depth of character, I realized how much I missed the niche of healthcare philanthropy. The time away gave me the confidence and reassurance I needed to fully commit to the career path I'm meant to be on.
Travel is my greatest passion. I find it is one of the best ways to force yourself out of your comfort zone and into the present moment. I love experiencing new cultures, gaining new perspectives, and the opportunity to learn.
Surround yourself with people you admire in the field and ask as many questions as you can. I was incredibly lucky to be on a team of knowledgeable, brilliant, and confident women early in my career who inspired me and pushed me to grow; it was an immersive gift. Cheer as loudly for others as they cheer for you.
One holiday break during university, I spent over 100 hours baking and building a gingerbread replica of St. Petersburg Cathedral (aptly named, St. Gingersburg).
