1. How did you get into healthcare philanthropy?
My first fundraising job was working for ALSAC/St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in their Dallas field office. I had a friend in high school who was a St. Jude patient, and the organization has always held a special place in my heart. Having the opportunity to work there soon after college only reaffirmed what an incredible place it is. I also quickly realized that although I was not cut out for the clinical side of medicine, I really enjoyed supporting those who were helping change these patients’ lives.
2. Why did you choose to make healthcare philanthropy your career?
It’s certainly the opportunity to help others that drives me, but it’s the donors, caregivers, and patients that continue to inspire me. Being surrounded by people who share your passion or hearing from a patient who benefited from a program that your team helped support, keeps me motivated to do more each day.
3. Tell us about a pivot point or crucial step in your career journey.
Joining the BSW Foundation nearly eight years ago was a crucial step for me as it has not only reaffirmed my passion for healthcare philanthropy, but it has also helped me take the next step professionally. I have been fortunate to have managers and Foundation leaders who have encouraged me, supported me, and provided me with leadership opportunities to advance my career while also understanding the personal demands I have at home as a mom of three.
4. What was your first job, and what is something it taught you?
My first job was working for an architecture firm as a marketing coordinator. Although I was a fish out of water in terms of industry knowledge, I quickly realized that my favorite part of the job was building relationships inside and outside of the company. This realization led me to my next job as a development team member at ALSAC/St. Jude, and I’ve been in fundraising and development ever since.
5. What are your future aspirations?
I hope to continue contributing to our mission. I’ve enjoyed serving as project lead on several large initiatives and working alongside such great teammates. I hope to have these opportunities moving forward, helping to impact change for my organization and the communities we serve.
